Ma-Kayla Johnson has been named head men and women's volleyball coach at LeMoyne-Owen College and will take over the program after the departure of former head coach Tyrell Jamison, who has accepted an assistant coaching position at Division 1 Kent State University.
Johnson takes over after a season at Germantown High School, where she served as the schools first ever African American head coach, and lead the team to a 10-7 record. "It's such a blessing and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to lead this program", said Johnson. Despite this upcoming season being her first season at the collegiate level, she is super optimistic and is looking forward to the start of year one. Johnson, who is very familiar with SIAC and HBCU volleyball spent her playing days at Dillard University where she was selected conference freshman of the year. She will look to use those experiences to lean on throughout the season.
Last season the Lady Magicians finished 3-23 overall, 1-17 in conference play, and failed to qualify for the SIAC post season tournament for the 4th consecutive season. The team possesses a total of nine returners from last season, which will give the Lady Magicians veteran leadership and experience that they haven't had the past two seasons.
Johnson will make her head coaching debut on September 3rd, when the Magicians travel to Huntsville, Alabama for their regular season opener vs Oakwood College.
