The LeMoyne-Owen College women's volleyball team picked up their first win of the season Wednesday in a road win vs long time rival Rust College. 

Not only did the Lady Magicians pick up the win, they did it in dramatic fashion, in a hostile environment. The two teams went back and forth all night long in a game that could have went either way. It would take all five sets to decide a winner, with the Lady Magicians winning the final set 18-16. The team got big time performances from a variety of players, which would ultimately be too much for Rust and guided  the Lady Magicians to the first win in the Coach Ma-Kayla Johnson era. 

For the second consecutive week the Lady Magician newcomers played like veterans, this time when the match was on the line, they made enough plays to help lift the team over the hump. Freshmen setter Maddelyn Ross set the tone for the Lady Magicians, showcasing  both skill and versatility. Ross finished the match with 22 kills, 18 assists, 2 Aces and 15 digs. The freshman setter has been awesome this season and through the first two matches, she is filling up the stat sheet. "Buying into the new program and coaching strategies has made a positive impact on my play ", said Ross. 

Teamwork has been a crucial ingredient to the success the team has experienced so far. In the latest game at Rust the Lady Magicians finished with a total of 45 assists , led by setter Abbie Chatman who finished with 25. As good as the team was offensively, they were just as impressive defensively. Freshman defensive specialist Jaylah Jordan recorded a match high 38 digs, while Junior Ay'Sia Smith led the team with 2 blocks and made it hard on opposing hitters looking to find good shots. 

The Lady Magicians look to pick up back to back wins when they go head to head with Fisk on September 16th. The game will be played in Nashville.
