The LeMoyne-Owen College men's golf team continued its 2026 season this past week as the Magicians competed in the Island Pointe Invitational in Knoxville, Tennessee. Held at Island Pointe Golf Course, the event marked the second tournament of the season and offered another opportunity to evaluate the newly assembled roster under head coach Dominique Worthen. While the Magicians finished 15th out of 17 teams, the tournament featured a standout individual performance from freshman Albert Laursen and continued to provide valuable early season experience.
Competing in a field of 94 golfers from programs across the region, Laursen delivered an impressive showing, finishing eighth overall with a total score of 154 strokes. His performance placed him among the top competitors in the tournament and highlighted his ability to compete at a high level early in the season.
Laursen opened play with a first round score of 80, finishing eight strokes over par on the challenging layout. The Island Pointe Golf Course tested players with its demanding design and required consistent shot making throughout. Despite the opening round, Laursen remained composed and positioned himself to make a strong push on the second day.
That push came in impressive fashion during round two. Laursen carded a 74, finishing just two strokes over par and improving by six strokes from his opening round. The strong finish brought his two round total to 154 strokes, or ten over par, securing his eighth place finish. Notably, Laursen was especially effective on the par five holes throughout the tournament, finishing with an average score of even par on those opportunities, a key factor in his success.
Behind Laursen, the Magicians continued to gain valuable contributions across the lineup. Senior Jason Curry finished tied for 72nd place, bringing experience and leadership to the team. Marvin Johnson followed in 80th place, battling through the course and gaining important reps that will be beneficial as the season progresses. Zion Hall rounded out the group with an 85th place finish, continuing to build his confidence in tournament play.
For head coach Dominique Worthen, the Island Pointe Invitational served as another important checkpoint for a team that is still coming together. As the second tournament of the season, it provided insight into both the team's strengths and areas that need refinement. The combination of experienced players and developing talent continues to take shape as the Magicians adjust to the demands of collegiate competition.
Although the team result did not reflect where the Magicians ultimately hope to be, the tournament offered clear signs of progress. Laursen's top ten finish demonstrated the team's potential to compete with some of the top individuals in the field, while the rest of the roster gained meaningful experience that will translate moving forward.
LeMoyne-Owen now shifts its focus to its next competition, the Central State University Invitational, which will take place April 9 through April 11 in Dayton, Ohio. The Magicians will compete at Miami Valley Golf Course, where they will look to build on the lessons learned and continue their growth as a team.
With two tournaments now completed, the Magicians are beginning to establish their identity under Coach Worthen. As the season continues, the combination of individual standout performances and collective development will be key in determining how far this team can go.
