Magicians Battle to the Final Buzzer in Hard Fought Loss to Benedict

LeMoyne Owen College came up just short in a tightly contested conference battle, falling 63 to 59 against Benedict College. Despite a determined defensive effort and strong perimeter shooting, the Magicians were unable to overcome key statistical disadvantages in a game that remained competitive until the final possession.

Offensively, LeMoyne-Owen College struggled to find consistent rhythm from the field, converting just 34.0 percent of their overall shot attempts. However, the Magicians were highly efficient from long range, shooting an impressive 39.1 percent from beyond the arc. They also capitalized at the free throw line, knocking down 81.8 percent of their attempts, which helped keep the score within reach throughout the contest.

Defensively, LeMoyne Owen delivered one of its most disciplined performances of the season. The Magicians limited the Tigers to 17 assists and forced 21 turnovers, consistently disrupting passing lanes and applying pressure on the perimeter. Their defensive intensity kept the game within a single possession in the closing minutes. However, rebounding proved to be a decisive factor, as Benedict out rebounded LeMoyne Owen 33 to 19, generating additional opportunities that ultimately made the difference.

Several Magicians turned in notable individual performances. Gerrard Living led the way with 11 points, adding two rebounds, one block, and one steal. He shot 50 percent from the field and an efficient 40 percent from three point range, providing steady scoring when the offense needed it most. Desmond Bratcher contributed nine points, three assists, and two steals, connecting on an impressive 75 percent of his three point attempts. His perimeter shooting helped stretch the defense and create spacing for his teammates.

Joshua Whitehurst delivered a spark off the bench, finishing with eight points and three steals in just 18 minutes of action. He shot 33 percent from beyond the arc and applied relentless defensive pressure, forcing the Tigers' guards into multiple turnovers and shifting momentum at key stretches of the game.

Although the outcome did not fall in their favor, the Magicians demonstrated resilience and defensive toughness against a strong Benedict squad. The narrow margin underscores how competitive the contest was from start to finish.

LeMoyne Owen will now turn its focus to a critical home matchup against Central State University on February 11 at 7:30 pm. With postseason implications in play, the Magicians will look to regroup and build momentum as they continue their push toward a berth in the SIAC tournament. Supporters are encouraged to come out and rally behind the team as they aim to bounce back and strengthen their playoff position.
