The LeMoyne-Owen College golf team has proven that excellence extends far beyond the course. Under the leadership of new Head Coach Dominique Worthen, the Magicians achieved an impressive 3.25 team grade point average for the fall semester, a testament to their dedication in the classroom as well as in competition.
The team, consisting of Zion Hall, Emory Butler, Marvin Johnson, and Jason Curry, has embraced the responsibility that comes with being a student athlete. Balancing early morning workouts, long practice sessions, travel for tournaments, and the daily demands of coursework requires discipline and maturity. These young men are not only committed to refining their swings and lowering their scores, but also to meeting deadlines, preparing for exams, and maintaining focus in their studies.
The sacrifice required to manage academics and athletics is significant. Time that could be spent socializing on campus or enjoying personal downtime is often devoted to studying, recovery, or training. Student athletes must learn to prioritize their responsibilities while still maintaining meaningful relationships and contributing positively to campus life. That balance is not easily achieved, yet this group has demonstrated that it is possible with structure and accountability.
Head Coach Dominique Worthen has emphasized that academic excellence is a cornerstone of the program's identity. "From day one, the message has been simple. We compete everywhere. Practice. Tournaments. Classrooms. Life. Academics are not separate from the program. They are the foundation of it," Worthen said.
With a 3.25 team GPA, the Magicians have set a strong standard for the future of the program. Their commitment to competing at a high level in every area of life reflects the true spirit of LeMoyne-Owen College and signals a bright path forward for the team both on the course and in the classroom.
