Magicians Hold Off Kentucky State 85-76

The LeMoyne-Owen Magicians picked up their first win of the year in a 85-76 victory over Kentucky State University. With their latest victory the team is now 8-6 on the season and 3-5 in conference play.

The Magicians led for most of the game but seen their double-digit lead cut to just one point in the final minutes of play. Being in close games has become familiar territory for Bonzi Wells and his team. Prior to Saturday evening's contest the team loss their first two games of 2022 by a total of three points, losing each game in the final seconds of play."It never feels good to lose games that way, I was really impressed with how poised our guys played down the stretch and how they stayed together tonight", said Head Coach Bonzi Wells.

Each time the Magicians seemed to be pulling away, Kentucky State junior guard Montrell Jacobs would make a play for the Throrobreds. Jacobs led all scorers with 29 points shooting 10-17 from the field and  4-8 from behind the Arc.

The Magicians were led in scoring by 5th year senior Jaquan Lawrence who scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds tallying his 6th double-double on the season. Senior guards Trevor Blackmon and Dwight Murray also scored in double figures pouring in 14 and 13 points each.

The team will look to push their winning streak to two games Monday night January 17th, when they host Central State University at Bruce-Johnson Hall. The game is set to start at 7:30pm.
