Kimberly Anderson

Kimberly Anderson serves as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at LeMoyne-Owen College. A native of Birmingham, Anderson brings more than 15 years of collegiate athletics experience as both a player and coach. Throughout her career, she has become known for building disciplined programs, developing strong student athletes, and creating cultures centered on accountability, toughness and personal growth.

Anderson began her collegiate journey at Anderson College, where she earned an Associate degree in Business. She later attended Claflin University and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. Continuing her commitment to education and leadership, Anderson also earned a Master of Education degree from Cambridge College.

Her coaching career has included success at multiple levels of collegiate basketball. During the 2011–2012 season, Anderson helped lead Concordia College to a National Championship. She later guided Lane College to the 2018–2019 SIAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship, giving the program its first tournament title since 1982. The historic accomplishment highlighted her ability to elevate programs and lead teams to championship level success.

Before arriving at LeMoyne-Owen College, Anderson built her reputation through player development, defensive strategy, and academic mentorship. Her teams consistently reflected discipline and a strong basketball IQ while maintaining a clear focus on academic achievement. She understands the balance required of student athletes and remains committed to preparing young women for success beyond the game of basketball.

Anderson was drawn to LeMoyne-Owen College because of the institution’s proud HBCU tradition and its commitment to developing the whole student athlete. The opportunity to coach in Memphis, a city with deep basketball roots, felt like a natural fit. She believes strongly in the mission of the college and values the opportunity to impact young women both on and off the court.

Her coaching philosophy centers on discipline, accountability and family. Anderson believes in coaching the person first, the student second and the athlete third. She emphasizes representing the name on the front of the jersey with pride while holding players to high standards in every area of life. For Anderson, success is measured not only through victories, but through the confidence, growth and character developed within her program.

One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching for Anderson is watching student athletes mature throughout their collegiate careers. She takes pride in seeing freshmen grow into confident leaders who graduate prepared for life after college. While championships remain important, she values the lasting relationships with former players and the opportunity to witness their personal and professional success.

Away from basketball, Anderson enjoys weightlifting, traveling, cooking Southern comfort food and spending time with family. She and her husband, Tommy Anderson, have shared more than 26 years of marriage grounded in faith and guided by Jesus Christ. She is also a proud mother and grandmother who treasures time spent with her family.

Anderson credits much of her coaching philosophy to her high school coach, Pat Hewitt, who taught her the importance of meeting players where they are while still challenging them to become their best selves. That lesson continues to shape the way she mentors and leads her players today.

Guided by the belief that “Success isn’t owned. It’s rented, and rent is due every day,” Anderson continues to build a culture of excellence within the Lady Magicians program. Her vision is to develop champions in competition, in the classroom, and in life while building a program the entire LeMoyne-Owen community can proudly support.
