Magicians Lose 60-57 On The Road At Delta State

The LeMoyne-Owen College men's basketball team opened their season with a 60-57 heartbreaking loss on the road at Delta State University.

The Magicians led the ball game for the majority of the night and took a two point lead into half time. Junior guard Kyle Houston provided a majority of the first half offense for the Magicians burying three first half bombs from beyond the arc.

After trailing 23–21 at halftime, Delta State outscored LeMoyne-Owen 39–34 in the second half. Despite being out scored in the second half it wasn't until the last couple minutes of the ball game that things would go south for the Magicians. Defensively, DSU ratcheted up the pressure in the final 20 minutes, forcing seven turnovers while holding the Magicians to just two fast-break points. The Statesmen also stayed disciplined, committing only 12 fouls in the entire contest – a major factor in a close defensive battle. With just 8 seconds reaming in the ball game the Magicians led 57-55.

Over the course of the final 8 seconds Delta State teammates Horace Kelby and Je'Marion Westbrook would making game winning plays to complete a comeback win for Delta State. Kelby knocked in a game winning layup with a foul 2.1 seconds left after Je'Marion Westbrookknocked down two free throws to tie after a flagrant foul. Kelby led all scorers with 26 points to go along with 8 rebounds.

For the Magicians it was junior guard Kyle Houston who was the team's lone double-figure scorer, scoring 17 points on 5-9 three point shooting. The Magicians will look to bounce back Thursday, November 20th at Bruce-Johnson Hall, where they will host Savannah State University. The Game is scheduled for 7:30pm.
