The LOC women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season this past weekend in their second game of the SIAC-GSC Challenge.
The Lady Magicians defeated Mississippi College 56-51 in hard nosed game that went back and forth until the final seconds of the contest.
The team trailed 30-29 at half time and headed into the fourth quarter dead locked at 40-40 The Magicians fan base came alive as both teams traded baskets for the first 9 minutes of the fourth. With 20 seconds on the game clock and 14 seconds on the shot clock Gemariona Hollingsworth-Pugh would find the ball in her hands. Mississippi College would elect not to foul and depend on their defense to get a stop, Hollingsworth-Pugh had other plans. The junior guard drove toward the basket before pulling up and nailing a jump-shot from about 15 feet to seal the deal. The shot would give the Lady Magicians a five point lead and ice the ball game with about four seconds remaining.
The team scored 11 points off second chances points, scored 32 points in the paint, and out rebounded MC 39-37. Despite getting the win the Lady Magicians shot just %32 from the field and were 1-10 from three point range.
Senior forward Kamryn Knight in points and rebounds with 15 points and 13 boards giving her the first double-double of the season. Also in double figures was junior guard Jade Salters who scored 10 points to go along with 4 rebounds.
The Lady Magicians return to action this Friday in Birmingham where they will go head to head with Edward Waters University.
