A week after defeating Lane College men's basketball team 62-49 the Magicians loss to the Dragons 82-76.
Due to power outages from a winter storm in the Memphis area, the game was moved from Bruce-Johnson Hall to Southwest Community College. The Magicians got off to a slow start and would never recover. Lane College took a 39-29 lead into halftime and would never trail in the ball game. The Magicians found themselves down by as many as 18 points early in the second half, before making a run that would fall short in the final moments.
The 82 points that Lane scored was the second most that they have scored all season and is also the most that they've scored in over fifteen games. The Magicians have struggled defensively, the last few games giving up more than 85 points per contest in those games.
The Magicians had four players score in double-figures Saturday night, and were led in scoring by sophomore guard Gjerard Wilson. Wilson scored 20 points and led a late game rally that would ultimately fall short in the final moments of the play. Also in double-figures for the Magicians was freshman guard Tariq Shepherd who poured in 16 points, and forwards Jaquan Lawrence (13) and Micah Evans (10). The Magicians would cut the Lane lead to three points after three-point field goals from senior guardTrevor Blackmon and sophomore Gjerard Wilson with under two minutes to go. Turnovers and missed shots would force the Magicians to foul late, giving Lane College the opportunity to ice the game at the free-throw line. Lane would finish the game 13-15 from the free-throw line and pick up their 9th win of the season.
The Magicians are now 11-8 on the season and look to get back on the right track Wednesday, February 9th. The Magicians will travel to Tougaloo College. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
