Trennis Grant was named the head baseball coach at LeMoyne-Owen College in July 2026, becoming the first major coaching hire under Director of Athletics Roderick Smothers, Jr. Recognized as one of the top rising coaches in HBCU baseball, Grant brings a proven record of building successful programs, developing student athletes, and creating championship cultures.
Grant arrives at LeMoyne Owen after serving as head coach at Clark Atlanta University. Prior to that, he made an immediate impact as the inaugural head baseball coach at Dillard University, where he was tasked with building the program from the ground up. In just one season, Grant guided the Bleu Devils to the 2023 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and an NAIA Regional appearance. Dillard also finished as the conference regular season runner up with a 14 and 5 conference record while producing multiple All GCAC selections.
His remarkable first season earned Grant the 2023 GCAC Coach of the Year honor as well as the 2023 HBCU Makeda Excellence Coach of the Year award. Under his leadership, pitcher Jorge Guerra was named both GCAC Pitcher of the Year and HBCU Makeda Excellence Baseball Player of the Year.
Before leading Dillard, Grant spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Southern University. He played an instrumental role in helping the Jaguars capture the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship and advance to the NCAA Regional. Working primarily with hitters, catchers, and outfielders, Grant helped develop several All SWAC performers while contributing to a team GPA of 3.0 during the 2021 spring semester.
Grant also served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Alabama A&M University from 2018 through 2020. There, he expanded the program's recruiting reach across 10 states while helping improve offensive production and player development. His efforts contributed to the growth of the Bulldogs on the field and helped produce All SWAC performer Johnathan Smith II.
His coaching career also includes two seasons at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he worked with hitters, catchers and outfielders while serving as the team's academic liaison. During his tenure, the Golden Lions improved in nearly every major offensive category and posted cumulative team GPAs of 3.26 and 3.33.
Grant began his collegiate coaching career at Hendrix College, where he worked with the outfielders and assisted with the development of the team's hitters. During his time there, the Warriors improved in several offensive categories, including doubles, triples and runs batted in.
Throughout his career, Grant has earned a reputation as an exceptional recruiter, teacher, and mentor. His programs have consistently demonstrated success both on the field and in the classroom, reflecting his commitment to developing complete student athletes.
At LeMoyne Owen College, Grant's vision extends beyond winning games. He is committed to restoring the Magicians baseball program through discipline, accountability and a championship mindset while preparing young men for success long after their playing careers have ended. His philosophy centers on building a culture that competes for championships each season while emphasizing academic excellence, leadership and personal growth.
A native of Canton, Mississippi, Grant earned his Associate of Arts degree from Holmes Community College in 2012 before receiving his Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Arkansas Tech University in 2014.
Grant and his wife, Cierra, are the proud parents of four children: Jalynn, Kamari, Renèe, and Taylor.
