Roderick Smothers, Jr.

    Prior to becoming the Athletic Director for Lemoyne-Owen College, Smothers served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Ticketing at Alabama A&M University the past three years. He also served as the Director of Athletics at Philander Smith University from 2020-2023 where he managed and led all facets of the Athletic Department to include corporate sponsorships, revenue generation and day to day operations.   
  
    During that timeframe Philander Smith University had one of the most successful runs in school history, winning five championships and two Commissioner’s Cups, which highlights the most successful Athletic Departments in the Conference.   
  
    While serving as the Director of Athletics at Philander Smith University, Smothers was voted to serve as the President of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. As the President, he represented the conference as a board member for the Athletic Director’s Association (ADA).   
  
    Smothers earned his Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Langston University, and a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico.
