MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The LeMoyne-Owen College men's cross country team opened its 2026 campaign at the City Auto Memphis Twilight XC Classic on September 5, gaining valuable early-season experience against one of the strongest fields the Magicians will see this fall.
Held at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, the four-mile collegiate race featured a deep field that included NCAA Division I programs such as Alabama, Ole Miss and Middle Tennessee State, giving the Magicians an opportunity to compete against high-level talent early in the season.
Sophomore Julian Tallant led the way for LeMoyne-Owen, completing the four-mile course in 24:49.4 while averaging an impressive 6:12.4 per mile. Tallant's performance provided a strong start for the Magicians as they opened their season against a talented field.
Freshman Kameron Wright followed with a strong showing in his collegiate cross country debut. Wright crossed the finish line in 25:43.5, averaging 6:25.9 per mile over the four-mile course.
For a LeMoyne-Owen squad featuring a mixture of veterans and newcomers, the season opener provided an important early test. The Magicians were able to experience a competitive atmosphere while getting a better understanding of where they stand and what areas need improvement as the season progresses.
"This was a solid showing from the guys. They faced a higher level of competition than they are used to, but I believe that will better prepare them for the next meets they have later down the line," said head coach Christopher Davis, II.
Junior Charles Smith also enjoyed the unique atmosphere surrounding the nighttime race.
"The meet was pretty lit honestly. Never ran that late at night before, and the crowd never stopped turning up! I'm proud of the way my guys performed, but we still have some work to do," Smith said.
With their season opener behind them, the Magicians will now turn their attention toward another opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd.
LeMoyne-Owen returns to action Saturday, September 19, at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee. The men will step up in distance to the 8,000-meter run, with the race scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.
