The LeMoyne-Owen College softball team closed out its time at the SIAC Crossover tournament in Gardendale, Alabama with resilience and offensive firepower, finishing 2-1 across its final three contests at Bill Noble Park. After a hard-fought loss to Albany State, the Lady Magicians responded with back-to-back wins over Savannah State and Allen, showcasing both their depth and determination as the tournament came to a close.
The opening game against Albany State proved to be a tightly contested battle that slipped away late. LeMoyne-Owen kept pace with the Lady Golden Rams throughout much of the game, demonstrating consistent offensive production. The score was knotted at four apiece after the third inning, and again tied at five after the top of the sixth, highlighting just how evenly matched the two teams were.
Several Lady Magicians turned in strong performances at the plate. Alexis Vigil led the way with an impressive three hits in four at bats, driving in two runs while also adding a double and a stolen base. Jaci Joiner and Kelby Harvey each recorded two hits in three at bats, with Harvey collecting two doubles and an RBI while Joiner added a double of her own. Khaylani Bailey contributed with a sacrifice fly and an RBI as part of a solid offensive effort that saw the team hit .387 overall.
Despite the offensive success, Albany State delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating four runs to take control. LeMoyne-Owen was unable to respond in the final frame, ultimately falling 9-5. Aidan Hughes started in the circle and worked two innings, while Bailey provided relief over the final four innings.
The Lady Magicians quickly turned the page in their second matchup, bouncing back with a commanding 12-7 victory over Savannah State. The game was defined early, as LeMoyne-Owen erupted for a 10-4 lead through the first three innings. The spark came in the top of the second when KiLitta Sowell launched a three run home run that shifted momentum firmly in favor of the Lady Magicians.
Sowell delivered a standout performance, finishing a perfect two for two at the plate with five RBIs, a double, and the pivotal home run. Kennedi Brownlee added to the offensive push with two RBIs of her own. While the team's overall batting average dipped compared to the first game, the ability to capitalize in key moments proved to be the difference.
Hughes returned to the circle and delivered a complete game effort, pitching all seven innings while managing the Savannah State offense. She scattered ten hits and allowed seven runs, but maintained composure throughout, throwing 92 pitches and securing the win. The early offensive surge ultimately proved too much for the Lady Tigers to overcome.
LeMoyne-Owen carried that momentum into its final game of the tournament, overpowering Allen University in a 14-6 victory. The Lady Magicians wasted no time asserting themselves, jumping out to a commanding 9-1 lead after just two innings. Their aggressive approach at the plate set the tone early and never allowed Allen to settle into a rhythm.
Once again, Sowell played a pivotal role in the outcome. She went two for four with two RBIs and added another home run, continuing her standout tournament performance. Jaliyah Davis and Raegan Petry also made significant contributions, each recording two hits, with Petry crossing the plate three times. As a team, the Lady Magicians tallied nine hits and eight RBIs while capitalizing on scoring opportunities to reach fourteen total runs.
Bailey took the ball as the starting pitcher and delivered a solid outing, working five innings while allowing six runs on six hits. She recorded four strikeouts and maintained control throughout much of the game. Although Allen attempted to mount a late push, LeMoyne-Owen's early offensive explosion proved insurmountable.
Across the entirety of the tournament, several players emerged as key contributors. Sowell led the charge with a .315 batting average, nine RBIs, and three home runs over seven games, consistently delivering in high pressure situations. Harvey also impressed with a .434 batting average, adding three doubles and three stolen bases, while Joiner contributed timely hitting and speed on the bases with three RBIs and three stolen bases of her own.
The Lady Magicians' strong finish at the SIAC Crossover tournament reflects a team that continues to grow in confidence and execution. By responding to adversity with back-to-back wins and showcasing explosive offensive capabilities, LeMoyne-Owen demonstrated its potential to compete at a high level. As the season progresses, this closing stretch in Gardendale could serve as a defining moment, reinforcing the team's identity and setting the stage for continued success.
